BuildingtheSAPAIFFoundationforDaimlerTruck’sS/4HANATransition

An S/4HANA transformation needs a clear approach to the interfaces connecting its systems. Working within the architecture and integration team, Codemine expertise supported the introduction of SAP AIF at Daimler Truck, combining technical architecture with ABAP development leadership.

The interface foundation was set before the bulk of development started, so every team building on S/4HANA worked from the same AIF setup and the same rules.

01

Context

Daimler Truck moved its SAP landscape to S/4HANA as part of a transition project delivered with SAP. Interfaces to and from the new system were a separate area of the program, with its own architecture and integration team.

AIF had not been used in this landscape before. It was introduced greenfield, which meant the setup, the conventions and the guidance for developers all had to be created as part of the project.

02

The challenge

The transition required a greenfield AIF implementation and guidance for the development team that would build on it. The integration scope included IDocs, proxies, mass data processing and ETL, alongside performance and archiving considerations.

These demands called for both architectural decisions and hands-on development. The team needed a common foundation for interface delivery, with complex AIF topics addressed as part of the implementation.

IDoc, proxy, mass data and ETL scenarios run through one greenfield AIF foundation into the S/4HANA landscape, with performance and archiving treated as requirements from the start.

Our approach

  1. 01

    Greenfield AIF setup

The overall AIF setup was built from the ground up as the standard way to run and monitor interfaces in the new S/4HANA landscape.

  2. 02

    Guidance for the development team

Alongside the setup came technical guidance for the developers who would build interfaces on it, so that later work followed one approach.

  3. 03

    Architecture connected with development

Codemine contributed both to the architecture and integration team and to ABAP development leadership, connecting design decisions directly with hands-on development work.

  4. 04

    Many interface types

The integration scope covered IDocs, proxies, mass data processing and ETL scenarios, each with different demands on AIF.

  5. 05

    Performance and archiving

Consulting on complex AIF implementations included processing performance and archiving, so that the interface layer could run reliably at volume.

Codemine’s contribution linked the architecture and integration team with the ABAP development team: setup and design decisions on one side, guidance and delivery on the other.
